I was given the chance to take a crack at the game a week prior to the early access launch, giving me around six hours with the game split across multiple play sessions.
Then there’s the one-man army. The ultimate dude who has min-maxed his build, got the perfect rolls during the run, and wants to get through the boss with or without his team. I saw all variations of these through my brief time with the game.
It offers both light and heavy attacks, coupled with a call-back attack that pulls in all the arrows you have shot to deal a blast of damage to anyone in its path. Coupled with the weapon, players also have a handy dodge for either pin-point escapes from damage or simply kiting enemies.

Each of these weapons have a primary and secondary attack that rely on you inflicting damage on enemies to build up their respective gauges.
Thankfully, Thunder Lotus has been listening it seems, as a changelog for the day-one patch I’ve seen lists a permanent reduction of the dodge cooldown to 1 second. The update will also offer more perks when starting out and reduce the number of hurdles you have to jump through to unlock features like weapon upgrades, hopefully reducing the starting grind.
Unfortunately, I can’t judge the game based on promised features. Thankfully, this multiplayer twist on the roguelike genre is enough of a draw alone for me to recommend 33 Immortals.
In the first part of this game, conquering Hell is an exercise in structure. Your goal is to defeat Lucifer, the “boss” of Inferno, but first you must work with other players to unlock an Ascension Battle just to reach him. How do you do that? Glad you asked: You 33 Immortals Gameplay must complete 12 Torture Chambers, mini raids where you are grouped up with up to six players to battle multiple waves of monsters.
While that isn’t a massive amount of time to pump into a roguelike, I think I managed to grasp the title’s unique gameplay loop and the direction the developers want to take it.
It’s curious to see just how players of different skill levels and experience come together in groups. Even in the most organized parties that have formed non-verbal agreements (using a handy emote wheel) to focus on specific objectives, there’s that one player who is doing their own thing in a corner while hacking away at the wrong thing, and somehow, surviving to the end.
That also means you can join an open game at any time – there are more than enough enemies around should I just want a quick “pick-up and raid” session to earn some Shards to spend on cosmetics and Perks in The Dark Woods, your home base on this adventure. Having a constant flow of Souls in and out Inferno also fits nicely within the narrative of 33 Immortals
The studio is already teasing a third gate for runs that will take place in a heavenly land, but this is slated to arrive later in 2025.
I had good luck defeating Torture Chambers with just three or four fighters total, but six was always welcome, hence my eventual shepherding. I also ended up prioritizing keys when shopping at the Bone Shrines scattered around Inferno because, dang it, I love unlocking chests.
Complete these to earn a variety of helpful loot and resources that you can then put into your character, increasing your odds of success as you proceed to tackle the next Torture Chamber, and then the one after that, and so forth.
